Cornea
Cornea is a vascular, transparent, watch glass like structure. It forms anterior one-sixth of the outer fibrous coat of the eyeball.

What Happens In Cornea

In short Cornea is a clear, protective outer layer. Along with the sclera (the white of your eye), it works as a barrier against dirt, germs, and other things that can cause damage to your eye.

The curvature of this outer layer helps determine how perfectly your eye can focus on objects close up and far away. The abnormal curve of the cornea means that when light enters the eye, it is not correctly focused on the retina, resulting in an unclear or blurry image. Astigmatism may also be caused by an irregularly shaped lens, located behind the cornea.

FAQ

Below you will find answers to the questions we are asked mostly.

What is corneal blindness?

When the cornea becomes cloudy or scarred, light cannot enter the eye to reach the light-sensitive retina. Poor vision or blindness occurs.

Does cornea become thin with age?

CCT decreases over the lifetime. We mean that older people have thinner corneas. CCT’s dependence on age is stronger in men.

Who is at risk of developing keratoconus?
Patients who have a family history of keratoconus or with certain systemic disorders, such as Down syndrome, are at a higher risk of developing keratoconus.
How is keratoconus inherited?
Mostly, keratoconus is not inherited and occurs in individuals with no family history of the disorder.
Can keratoconus get better on its own?

Keratoconus is a lifelong eye disease that does not go away on its own.

What is corneal abrasion?
A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the clear, protective layer that is cornea. The reasons can be dust, dirt, sand, wood shavings, metal particles, contact lenses or even the edge of a piece of paper.
How serious is a corneal abrasion?
But some deeper abrasions that occur in the center of the cornea (directly in front of the pupil) can leave a scar and result in a loss of visual acuity. If left untreated, some deep corneal abrasions may cause a corneal ulcer that can result in severe vision loss.
